The Playing Platypus

This painting predicts a section of fresh running waters of the Karuah River.

This area is known to house a family of platypuses and they are often seen playing and feeding around their nests which is shown in the painting.

I was taught by my grandfather and uncles to watch and learn their habits so as if we needed to trap them as they were part of our survival food chain. I never had to catch one which pleased me as I have always enjoyed watching the family play and grow in their natural habitat.

Les Elvin is a descendant of the Wonnarua people, a proud Aboriginal nation from the Hunter Valley Region of NSW.

The Wonnarua people have traditionally used a variety of techniques to tell the stories of their people. and pass the knowledge of their coexistence with their “country “from generation to generation, including bark paintings, tree carvings and cave paintings.

An accomplished award winning artists Les uses the symbols of his ancestors in order to keep their culture alive and to continue the traditional education process for current and future generations.

Family of Goannas

The family of goannas have been playing while travelling around their territory. They have sensed that there are hunters in the area from the smoke coming from the hunters’ fire. The goannas are hurrying across the creek which is between them and their home which is among the rocky outlet. The goannas have left their tracks as scurry home.

Red-kangeroo

The Red Kangaroo

In this painting I have illustrated mountain with cliff faces, hills, water running out of the mountain and hills.

A large red kangaroo is heading towards a number of trees for safety.

The kangaroo has left a number of tracks.

There are three aboriginal men sitting around a fire preparing to track the kangaroo.

The kangaroo has sensed this from the smoke from the fire rising up towards a gully in the mountain.

The Echidna and the Snake

This painting illustrates a lone aboriginal sitting with his weapons watching the movements of the snake and echidna.

The snake is to be seen climbing around the rock caves in search of goanna eggs as this is his favourite meal.

The echidna has seen to have found a white ants nests. He is just about to break open the white ants nest and feast on his favourite meal.
